An instrumental rock guitarist, Joe, along with Steve Vai, is one of the members of G3, the touring guitar supergroup. The third guitar chair in G3 has been filled by various guest guitarists such as Eric Johnson, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Robert Fripp, Adrian Legg, Michael Schenker, John Petrucci, and Yngwie Malmsteen. Influenced by blues and rock guitar players Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton, Eddie Van Halen, and Buddy Guy, Satriani has studied and absorbed from several jazz guitarists as well. Joe Satriani is mostly known for his technical wizardry as an instrumental rock guitar player. He has released 18 CDs including those with fellow G3 bandmate (and former student), Steve Vai. Most of Joe's early years as a guitar player were spent with a late '60s Fender Telecaster with a Bigsby tremolo bar. After playing various Gibson and Fender guitars most of his early musical life, Satriani tried to create his own guitar. This search for the "perfect" electric guitar, led him to Ibanez with whom he developed his own signature instrument, the Ibanez JS-2000. He also teamed up with Peavey to create a signature tube amp, the JSX (let us just mention here that we have an entire curriculum based on learning rock guitar, a rock rhythm and rock solo course. learn more here). (B. July 15, 1956, Westbury, NY) Joe Satriani began playing guitar at age 14 and quickly became proficient. While in high school, he started teaching others including Steve Vai, with whom he founded a lasting musical relationship. "Satch" moved to Berkeley, California in the late '70s. Besides being one of the most respected and technically proficient electric guitar players of the past twenty years, Joe has also made a name for himself as a highly regarded guitar teacher with several famous guitarists having passed through his teaching studio including future Metallica guitarist, Kirk Hammett, David Bryson of the Counting Crows, Larry LaLonde of Primus, and jazz-rock fusion player Charlie Hunter.
