His primary influence was his idol, Muddy Waters, as well as T-Bone Walker, Lightenin' Hopkins, and Guitar Slim. Guy himself has been a huge source of inspiration to several generations of guitar players including Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan. Besides electric blues, Guy also performs on acoustic guitar and has made a major mark on both blues and rock guitar playing (let us just mention here that we have an entire curriculum based on learning blues guitar, a blues rhythm and solos. learn more here). Buddy Guy's performance style is marked by high-energy guitar histrionics and boundless onstage energy, along with a tortured vocal style that's nearly as distinctive as his incendiary rapid-fire electric guitar playing. Buddy Guy has had a long relationship with Fender guitars and amps. A Fender Stratocaster played through a Fender Tweed Bassman (4X10) has been his setup of choice since the 50s. Like many guitarists though, Guy has several different instruments and amps including vintage and modern electric guitars, acoustic guitars, and vintage tube amps. These include several Fender Stratocasters, a Gibson SG, Gibson ES-335, Guild Nightingale, Guild Starfire 4, Fender Bassman amps, a Marshall amp, and a Martin acoustic guitar. (B. July 30, 1936, Lettsworth, LA) Guitarist, George "Buddy" Guy is probably the greatest living guitar player of the classic Chicago electric blues style. His idol and mentor was Muddy Waters. For much of his life, Guy received very little commercial recognition until his first three albums for Silvertone in the '90s all earned Grammy Awards. For his latest "Blues Singer" sessions, Buddy Guy (acoustic guitar, vocals) is joined on selected tracks by some equally legendary friends. B.B. King (acoustic lead guitar) and Eric Clapton (acoustic slide guitar) both perform on Buddy's version of the John Lee Hooker classic "Crawlin' Kingsnake." Eric Clapton refers to Buddy Guy as his favorite blues guitar player. Do you want to learn to play guitar? Click on one of the links below to see which Zap Guitar lessons are right for you!
